John and his wife Barbara are true Marlborough locals with their family connections in Marlborough going back to 1880. John and his wife Barbara attended college in Marlborough and later moved to Wellington in 1964, where John completed a BCA degree at Victoria University. John graduated from the International Institute for Management Development, IMD - Geneva in 1981

John has held a variety of roles are various organisations including Westpac and Woolworths. In 1970 he joined The Todd Group and rose to become Group Company Secretary and Chief Financial Officer. For 15 years prior to his retirement in 2008 John operated his own Chartered Accounting practice on the Kapiti Coast. He was a Director and Trustee of a large number of SME's providing a very hands on approach to supporting these businesses.
John has been a very active Business Mentor with Business Mentors NZ for the last 2 years providing a very high level of support to a number of both large and small local enterprises. John feels the mentoring process is invaluable to businesses as Mentors bring a fresh set of eyes to the business and the challenges they face and assist with problem solving and expansion. He also has first-hand experience of how mentoring can bring growth to the local economy and target export activities which contribute to the national economy.
